E-Commerce Companies To Display Country Of Origin On All Products

New Delhi: Amid increasing anti-China sentiments in the country, e-commerce companies have been asked to display the country of origin of products sold on their platforms.

The labels will help consumers make a better, informed decisions.

Mentioning the country of origin is a mandatory feature for the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal which government departments use for public procurement.

E-commerce majors such as Flipkart and Amazon have asked time till July to implement it, citing that it will take time to update older products. Also, certain players have reportedly raised questions on clarifying what would be considered as the country of origin for products if its raw materials are procured from China and the manufacturing takes place in India.

“We welcome and wholeheartedly support the government’s decision to promote Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. We are fully committed to promote India-made products and the manufacturing sector in the country. We have already initiated discussions with our sellers, merchant partners on the next steps to drive this initiative further,” a Paytm Mall spokesperson told LiveMint.
