Srinagar: The Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Facial Recognition System (FRS) installed along the Amarnath Ji Yatra route has started yielding results.
The system has helped the Jammu and Kashmir Police nab a suspected Over-Ground Worker (OGW) of a terrorist organisation at the Langanbal check-post in the Anantnag district. The suspect, a resident of Seer Hamdan under the Mattan police station area, has been handed over to the Pahalgam Police station for further legal proceedings.
According to an official, the police have installed the FRS to strengthen security in the region after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The system is designed to swiftly identify and track individuals involved in criminal activities, including terrorists, OGWs, absconders, history sheeters, thieves, and drug peddlers.
The system provides a comprehensive background with full details of crimes and other relevant information, making it easier for law enforcement agencies to track down suspects.
The police claimed that the arrested OGW had a prior FIR dating back to 2005 and was working as a carpenter. The police were able to identify him using the FRS at the Langanbal check-post. The system’s ability to detect and alert authorities about any security threats will prove to be a game-changer in law enforcement efforts, particularly during the Amarnath Ji Yatra that will commence from July 3.
Sources have said that the FRS is a foolproof system, designed to recognise individuals even if they are wearing face masks or attempting to disguise themselves.
“This technology has been instrumental in maintaining law and order in the region and is an integral part of modern law enforcement practices. By harnessing advanced technology, law enforcement agencies aim to track down criminals more effectively and contribute to a broader framework of intelligent and proactive policing,” an official said.
