Bhubaneswar: Odisha may be prone to cyclones and floods, but according to official data, more people die of snakebite than sunstroke or lightning.

During the last three years and up to June this year, 2,217 people have died from snakebite.

In 2016-17, 601 people died of snakebite; the figure stood at 817 in 2017-18 and 765 in 2018-19. In the last two months of this year alone, 43 people have died of snakebite.

According to some media reports, Balasore, Ganjam, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrakh account for the maximum number of snakebite-related death cases.

Lightning:1,258
Fire accident: 285
Cyclone: 125
Sunstroke: 116
Flood: 33
Whirlwind: 32
Boat Capsizal: 26
