Malkangiri: In a significant step toward improved regional connectivity, Malkangiri Airport in Odisha successfully completed its trial run on Wednesday, bringing the launch of regular commercial operations closer to reality.
A nine-seater aircraft operated by IndiaOne Air landed safely at the newly-developed airstrip. The aircraft, flown by two pilots and similar to those already serving Jeypore, touched down as part of the final readiness checks. Upon arrival, it received a ceremonial water cannon salute from two fire tenders deployed by the district administration.
Senior officials from the district administration, airport authorities, security agencies, and IndiaOne Air were present to witness the trial. Technical and security teams had spent the previous two to three days inspecting the runway, signaling systems, security infrastructure, and overall operational readiness.
Following the successful landing, the pilot noted that a detailed assessment of the runway, landing conditions, and other facilities would be conducted before submitting a comprehensive report to the authorities. Initial feedback described the airport’s infrastructure and arrangements as satisfactory. However, regular flight services will commence only after receiving final regulatory approvals and completing all remaining procedures.
The development fulfils a long-standing demand from Malkangiri residents for direct air connectivity, particularly to the state capital Bhubaneswar. Once operational, the service is expected to boost trade, industry, and private investment while enhancing access to quality healthcare and higher education in this remote district.
