New Delhi: Amid the devastation and ruins caused by last week’s deadly earthquake, here’s a miraculous, hearth-warming story.
Nearly five days after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, a man was pulled out alive from the rubble of a hotel on Wednesday, fire service officials said.
A joint team of Myanmar and Turkish rescuers, who were among many engaged in day-night operations to find survivors, found a 26-year-old man buried under the ruins of the building in the capital city of Naypyidaw, AFP reported.
A day earlier, rescue workers had saved a 63-year-old woman from the rubble of another building in Naypyidaw.
The Myanmar Junta government’s official newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Tuesday that a team of Chinese rescuers saved four people on Monday from the ruins of a large apartment complex named the Sky Villa which collapsed during the quake.
Among the rescuees were a 5-year-old and a pregnant woman who had been trapped for more than 60 hours.
The massive earthquake and its aftershocks have killed over 2,700 people. The casualties are expected to rise as 4,521 people are injured and 441 missing.
The earthquake, whose epicentre was in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, also caused extensive structural damage. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 10,000 buildings have collapsed or been severely damaged in central and northwest Myanmar.
