Khurda: An explosion in a cracker unit at Siko village under Jankia police limits in Khurda district on Saturday claimed five lives.
The deceased were identified as Madhabi Sethi (8), Tikili Sethi (4), Dutee Sethi (62), Dolly Sethi (19) and Babi Sethi (40).
Three persons, who sustained serious burns in the mishap, were admitted to the district headquarters hospital and their condition is said to be critical.
According to reports, the blast occurred in the house of one Sanei Sethi, who allegedly ran an illegal cracker-manufacturing unit, in the wee hours of the day. The asbestos roof of the house was blown off under the impact of the explosion.
On being informed, fire personnel rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operation.
