Mahanadi Floodwaters Reach Mundali Barrage In Cuttack, Water Level Below Danger Mark

Cuttack: The season’s first floodwaters of the Mahanadi released from Hirakud Dam arrived at Mundali barrage, on the outskirts of Odisha’s Cuttack city, on Saturday night.

Talking to the media on Sunday, the authorities of Mundali barrage said that the discharge of the floodwaters from the barrage by 9 am was 1.72 lakh cusecs per second.

Allaying flood fears in the downstream areas, they said that the danger level of the barrage was 97 feet while the water level in the upper and lower catchments was 81.50 feet and 78.50 feet respectively.

With the water level much below the danger level and the maximum discharge capacity of the barrage at 12 lakh cusecs per second, there was no flood threat either in the upstream or the downstream of the river, they added.

On the opening of five more gates of the dam, the authorities said floodwaters released in the second phase would not cross the danger mark at Mundali. as most of the tributaries of Mahanadi had less water at present due to scanty rainfall.
