Former Odisha Speaker Maheswar Mohanty Hospitalised; Not On Ventilator, Condition Stable, Says Son

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJD leader and former Odisha Assembly Speaker Maheswar Mohanty has been admitted to a private hospital at Chandrasekharpur area in Bhubaneswar.

According to family sources, the former minister attended various events in Puri and later took part in Gajalakshmi Puja celebration at Badashankha area on Tuesday. “He complained of uneasiness after reaching home, following which we got him admitted to the hospital,” his son Sunil Mohanty told the media.

He also refuted reports that he suffered a mild brain stroke and is on ventilator. “He is in the ICU and his condition is stable,” he added.

Sources further said that Mohanty visits the private hospital in Bhubaneswar once or twice a month for regular health check-ups. He was also admitted to the hospital for a couple of days, last month.

The five-time MLA from Puri Assembly constituency had lost the 2019 elections. He held key portfolios in Naveen Patnaik’s cabinet as minister and also served as Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly from May 21, 2004, to March 31, 2008.

Mohanty had earlier survived gun shot injuries after being fired at by miscreants on February 21, 2014 near Amala club in Puri when he was the Revenue Minister.
