New Delhi: For decades, Champat Rai remained one of the most influential yet understated figures in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, evolving from a chemistry lecturer into the driving force behind the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and one of the most powerful functionaries of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
Champat Rai’s journey began in academia, where he worked as a chemistry lecturer before dedicating himself full-time to the activities of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), according to HT. Over the years, he emerged as a key organiser of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, earning the trust of senior leaders through his organisational skills and meticulous record-keeping.
Following the formation of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra in 2020, Rai became its general secretary and was widely regarded as the de facto administrator of the temple project. During the temple’s construction, particularly from the bhoomi pujan on August 5, 2020, to the consecration ceremony on January 22, 2024, he oversaw day-to-day operations as Trust chairman Mahant Nritya Gopal Das remained unwell.
Rai regularly briefed the media on construction progress, coordinated with engineers, cleared design proposals and supervised various administrative aspects of the ambitious temple project, making him the public face of its execution.
His rise within the movement coincided with the Ram Temple becoming one of independent India’s most significant religious and political projects. Though he largely stayed away from electoral politics, Rai wielded considerable influence within the temple trust and the wider Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
Reacting on his resignation, Acharya Mahamandaleshwar, Niranjani Akhara Swami Kailashanand Giri told ANI: “… Champat Rai has worked tirelessly for the Ram Janmabhoomi temple construction. If there is no issue, he will clarify, and once investigations are complete, the senior office‑bearers of the VHP and the government may reinstate him. If any wrongdoing is found, the government will punish those responsible.”
The spotlight on Rai has intensified following his resignation as general secretary of the Trust amid the ongoing controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in Ram Temple donations. While his departure marks the end of an era in the Trust’s leadership, his role in steering the temple project from conception to completion remains a defining chapter in the history of the Ram Mandir movement.
