Girl Death After Delivery In Odisha’s Kandhamal: Parents Suspect Role of School Contractor

Phulbani: In a new turn to the death of the minor girl and her newborn baby in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, her parents have alleged that a contractor was responsible for making their daughter pregnant.

The Class VII girl student’s parents, in a petition to the district SP, have said while she was staying in the hostel of residential Rangaparu Government Girls’ School under Belaghar police limits of G Udaygiri block, the contractor was carrying out the repair work of the building and sleeping there at night.

They suspected that the contractor developed physical intimacy with their daughter and made her pregnant. Claiming that he had high political links, they demanded that he should be brought under the purview of police investigation into the death of their daughter.

The girl had given birth to a baby boy in community health centre. While the newborn died soon after, she succumbed while undergoing treatment on Friday.

The girl’s family members along with villagers staged a dharna in front of Belaghar police station on Saturday alleging that negligence of district administration and doctors of the CHC led to her death.

The hostel matron of the residential school, Ranjita Kanhar, has been suspended and headmaster, hostel superintendent and an ANM have been issued show-cause notice based on investigation by Baliguda sub-collector Subhankar Mohapatra.

Meanwhile, the police suspect the role of a youth of the girl’s village as the school authorities have claimed that she got pregnant when she had gone home for holidays. The boy, who used to have physical relation with the girl a year back, is suspected to have impregnated the girl, said Belghar IIC Dipak Rout.
