New Delhi: After the Income Tax department allowed one-time relaxation for e-verification of income tax returns (ITRs) till February 28, 2022, the taxpayers have sought another extension of the date for filing the ITRs due to glitches on the new income tax filing portal.
With two days left for filing the IT returns before the due date of December 31, 2021, there has been a surge in ITR filings as taxpayers look to avoid penalties. Apparently the department’s portal has stopped functioning smoothly due to heavy traffic.
Expressing their concern over the glitches faced by them on social media platforms like Twitter, the assessees have requested the Central government to extend the due date for ITR filing for 2020-21 financial year.
On December 28, the department had urged taxpayers to file the ITRs by the extended date of December 31, 2021. Total 4,86,34,306 ITRs have been filed up to December 28 in the latest update on Wednesday, an Indian Today report stated.
Even as the department is yet to issue any update on the matter, the taxpayers, who are unable to file ITR due to glitches on the new tax filing portal, have appealed for an extension of the due date to avoid paying the penalty.
The number of ITRs filed by December 29 is less than the last year’s figures, with around one crore ITRs yet to be filed. If the glitches in the portal, as claimed by the taxpayers continues, it would not be possible for them to file the ITRs by the due date.
It may be noted that the department on Wednesday gave a one-time relaxation to taxpayers, who have not e-verified their income tax returns (ITRs) for 2019-20 fiscal, to complete the verification process by February 28, 2022.
