New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday firmly rejected media reports indicating a possible hike of ₹25–28 per litre in petrol and diesel prices shortly after the assembly elections, describing such claims as “mischievous and misleading” and asserting that no such proposal is under consideration.

“There are some news reports suggesting a price hike of petrol and diesel. It is hereby clarified that there is no such proposal under consideration by the government,” the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated in a post on X.

The ministry added that India remains the only country where petrol and diesel prices have not increased in the last four years. It maintained that the government and oil public sector undertakings have taken relentless steps to insulate citizens from steep increases in international prices.

The government had previously said that retail fuel outlets across the country are operating normally. Even after the escalation in the West Asia conflict and the rise in Brent crude oil prices triggered by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, fuel prices have remained unchanged in India, while many countries have witnessed a jump of up to 85 per cent, according to recent industry data cited by NDTV Profit.

On the diesel front, prices have seen a sharp rise in several countries in recent months amid geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, providing an update on LPG supplies, said that the supply of domestic LPG is normal, and no dry‑out has been reported at any distributor.
