Bhubaneswar: The ground-breaking ceremony of SiCSem Private Limited’s Compound Semiconductor unit was performed at Infovalley in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in Odisha’s journey towards becoming a hub for advanced electronics manufacturing.
While Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the ceremony through video conference, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Odisha IT Minister Mukesh Mahaling were present at the site.
With an investment of Rs 2,067 crore, the facility is expected to create 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities and manufacture critical components for electric vehicles, defence systems, railways, and renewable energy. The facility will have an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and a packaging capacity of 96 million units.
A compound semiconductor manufacturing facility will be set up by SiCSem Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Archean Chemical Industries Ltd, which has been allocated 23 acres of land by Idco at EMC Park, Infovalley, here.
The semiconductor project aligns with the national objectives of the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ missions, aiming to strengthen India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, reportedly.
Semiconductors form the core components of electronic devices, including mobile phones and other digital equipment. They are vital for producing transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits, which are crucial to the electronics industry.
Affirming Odisha’s commitment to building a strong, self-reliant, and technology-driven economy, the Chief Minister said the state is known for its progressive policies, world-class infrastructure, and growing innovation ecosystem.
He said a Rs 64 crore Research & Innovation Centre at IIT Bhubaneswar will also be established to advance research in Silicon Carbide technology and strengthen the state’s semiconductor ecosystem.
Majhi emphasised Odisha’s growing prominence in advanced electronics and semiconductor manufacturing with the Bhoomi Pujan of SiCSem Private Limited’s Compound Semiconductor Facility.
“Today marks a proud moment for Odisha as we take a significant step towards becoming a hub for advanced electronics and semiconductor manufacturing with the Bhoomi Pujan of SiCSem Private Limited’s Compound Semiconductor Facility at Info Valley, Bhubaneswar. This milestone reflects our vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat and showcases Odisha’s progressive policies, world-class infrastructure, and growing innovation ecosystem. Our government has consistently focused on developing future-ready sectors through dedicated policies in semiconductors, electronics, AI, and emerging technologies, making Odisha one of India’s most investment-friendly destinations,” Majhi said in a post on X after the event.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The Double-Engine Govt has been making development in Odisha in various aspects like Railway, Highway, Electronics, Telecom, Semiconductors. A semiconductor research lab is going to be set up in IIT Bhubaneswar. ”
India currently depends on countries such as China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore for semiconductor components. The establishment of this facility in Bhubaneswar is expected to reduce such dependence and enhance domestic production capacity.
Officials said this project will not only boost Odisha’s technological capabilities but also contribute significantly to building a self-reliant India in the semiconductor sector.
