New Delhi: Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, who heads the exam reforms task force, set up by the government after the NEET UG 2026 paper leak, suggested generating question papers at the last minute from a large question bank to reduce the risk of such happenings.
He also called for expanding computer-based testing across the country.
“Question papers create an economic incentive for them to be sold. So, the way to solve this is to really have a massive bank of questions, and only at the last minute generate the question paper for that day, and therefore the question of ‘a’ question paper goes away, and there’s no economic incentive for that. That’s one way to think about how to solve this,” he said speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Tuesday.
Asked whether artificial intelligence (AI) could generate exam papers on the day of a test, Nilekani replied, “Yeah. Sure. Yeah,” as quoted by news agency ANI.
Stressing the need to move towards computer-based testing (CBT) for all examinations, he said India already had 150,000 locations where students could take tests, but the network needed to be expanded.
“The other thing is, of course, how to make sure all exams are done on a computer-based testing, and that requires a network of locations. We have 150,000 locations where a young boy or girl can take a test. That needs to be expanded,” Nilekani said.
The panel would address these issues and indicated that the government was keen to implement its recommendations, he said.
“I think these are all systemic issues which we will address in our committee. And the prime minister is very keen to implement our decisions,” he said.
