Harsh Summer Ahead For Odisha, Mercury To Shoot Above 40°C From Tomorrow

Bhubaneswar: After a brief respite from the scorching heat due to nor’wester induced rain and thunderstorm activity for five days, Odisha is all set to experience steep rise in temperature.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), many parts of the state are likely to experience maximum temperature over 40 degree Celsius in next couple of days.

The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar said that the maximum day temperature is likely to rise by 6-8 degrees Celsius across the state during the period.

The MeT Centre has also issued yellow warning for hot and humid weather in in the state starting from April 17. Maximum temperature is expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius in Balangir, Sambalpur, Titlagarh, Jharsuguda and Sonpur during the period.

It said many parts of Odisha are likely to experience a rise in temperature by six to eight degrees Celsius in the next couple of days. Coastal districts like Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati and Puri will witness severe hot and humid conditions from April 14. Several parts of Odisha will experience more than 40 degree Celsius on April 15-16.

In view of the harsh days predicted by the IMD, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued advisory to the administration in all districts to take precautionary measures.

The SRC, in its letter to the collectors, said as per the special bulletin issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) on the day, hot and humid discomfort weather conditions and heatwave are likely in Odisha.

Due to anticipated northwesterly/westerly dry air and high solar insolation, maximum (day) temperature is likely to be more than 40 degree Celsius at many places and is likely to be above normal by 4 to 5 degree in some districts from April 15.

The SRC said since the IMD has issued a yellow warning, the following steps should be taken by the collectors:

• Steps should be taken to circulate the warning message among the people

• Weather condition may pose health concern for vulnerable people including infants, elderly and sick

• People should be advised to take precautionary measures while going out during noon from 11 am to 3 pm

• Situation should be monitored closely and necessary action taken as per the prevailing situation.
