Helmet now must for pillion riders in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: The two-wheeler pillion riders in odisha will now have to wear helmet with the state government introducing a new regulation to this effect on Thursday.
“The government has made helmet compulsory for bike riders and those riding pillion. The Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) powers will be vested on police stations to crack down on violators. An ASI-rank official will inspect and impose penalty against those breaking traffic rules and can also impound their driving licence,” informed Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi through videoconferencing at state secretariat here.
Though the number of road accidents has declined in the state, fatalities per accident is not very encouraging. Therefore, the government has decided to make helmets mandatory for riders and pillion riders as well, Home Department Principal Secretary Asit Tripathy said.
