New Delhi: Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has reignited one of Indian cricket’s most controversial cases, making fresh and sweeping allegations linked to the 2010 Kochi IPL franchise row involving senior Congress leaders, including former party president Sonia Gandhi and MP Shashi Tharoor.
According to reports, Modi’s remarks, made in a recent interview to news agency ANI, revisit the dispute surrounding the Kochi Tuskers Kerala IPL franchise, a controversy that had once triggered political turmoil and eventually led to Tharoor’s resignation as Minister of State for External Affairs in 2010.
The Kochi franchise row originally erupted during the early years of the Indian Premier League when questions were raised over the ownership structure of the Kochi Tuskers Kerala team and the role of Sunanda Pushkar in the consortium that bid for the franchise. The issue quickly escalated into a political flashpoint, with allegations of conflict of interest and misuse of ministerial influence.
In the latest claims, Modi has alleged that he faced political pressure while investigating or questioning the franchise’s ownership details. He has also suggested that senior politicians were involved in influencing decisions around the matter—claims that have once again brought the decade-old issue back into public discussion.
