Hoshiarpur: High-drama unfolded on a street in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, after an undertrial attempted to flee after stabbing a police custody before being fatally shot.
The video of the incident that has now gone viral on social media, resembles a clip from a Bollywood potboiler.
The incident occurred when undertrial Naseeb Singh was being escorted back to prison after a routine medical examination. He was tied with a rope to his senior constable Jasdeep Singh.
It occurred around 1.30 pm on Saturday when a police team escorted three undertrial inmates from Central Jail, Hoshiarpur, to the Civil Hospital for a scheduled medical examination ahead of a court hearing. Four police personnel were assigned to supervise the prisoners during the visit.
The two are first seen travelling in an e-rickshaw, before some kind of altercation breaks out.
Within seconds, the two men are seen grappling violently against each other on the ground. Despite being restrained, the prisoner is seen attacking the constable using a sharp-edged weapon and repeatedly tried to overpower him.
Naseeb then attempts to flee, but Jasdeep pulls out his service revolver and aims it at him. The undertrial then pounces on the constable and attempts to grab the weapon.
Jasdeep finally gets the better of him and opens fire. Naseeb is spotted crawling away and then lying stretched out on the ground.
Jasdeep, who is known to suffer from asthma, sustained serious injuries while trying to prevent the escape, the police said.
“A police personnel was escorting inmate Naseeb Singh when he suddenly attacked the constable with a sharp weapon. During the struggle, shots were fired from the service revolver and the accused sustained bullet injuries,” SSP Sandeep Kumar Malik said,
Naseeb was facing seven criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, and offences under the NDPS Act, the police said.
A detailed inquiry has been launched by senior officers. The standard operating procedures followed during prisoner escorts will be checked. Security protocols during hospital transfers are also likely to come under the scanner.
