Hockey Champions Trophy: India Pulls A Surprise On Argentina With 2-1 Win

Bhubaneswar: India registered its second consecutive win at Breda Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy, on Sunday, by beating Olympic champions Argentina 2-1.

Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik congratulated the team on twitter.

The teams, which had won their respective openers on Saturday, came face-to-face for the second-round robin match. It was an exciting match with tension brewing up amid the goals taken and defended.

Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh scored the two goals for India in the second quarter. Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner in the 17th minute. In the last five minutes, India was reduced to ten players with Birendra Lakra being shown a yellow card. Mandeep, however, managed to find the nets and score the winning goal.

Argentina’s lone goal came from the sticks of Gonzalo Peillat, who scored in the 30th minute.

Former Indian Hockey Team captain Dilip Tirkey also took to twitter to congratulate India on its win.

Indian had earlier crushed bitter-rivals Pakistan 4-0 in their campaign opener on Saturday. The team’s next match will be against world champions Australia on June 27.
