Gurugram: A 25-year-old technician of the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram has been arrested for allegedly digitally raping a 46-year-old air hostess while she was on ventilator at the medical facility. The survivor lodged an FIR after being released from hospital, in which she narrated her ordeal. She also claimed that there were two nurses in her room at that time but they did nothing to prevent the act.
Deepak Kumar, the accused, is from Muzaffarpur in Bihar. He joined Medanta five months ago as an ICU technician. He apparently holds a bachelors degree in the handling of operation theatre equipment from a private university.
The air-hostess, from West Bengal, was attending a training in Gurugram when she fell ill after a swim in the pool of the hotel where she had put up. She was admitted to the hospital on April 3 and put on ventilator support in the ICU.
According to the survivor, a hospital staff entered her room on April 4 in the presence of two nurses and digitally raped her on the pretext of checking the size of her waistband. The air-hostess claimed that she was able to see and hear everything but was unable to move to resist the man.
Digital rape has nothing to do with technology. It means the insertion of fingers or ties into the private parts of a woman without her consent. In this case, digit stands for the fingers and toes.
“The hospital provided all material, including CCTV footage from that date. We went through the CCTV footage thoroughly, not only from the ICU, but other parts of the hospital till we were sure that Deepak Kumar committed the offence. We also spoke to nearly 50 doctors, nurses and technicians during the investigation,” a senior police officer said.
Kumar was on duty when he committed the crime, the police said. They are also checking whether the accused has been involved in similar activity in the past.
