Nuapada: The parents and guardians of school students staying in a government hostel on Saturday staged a demonstration in front of collector’s office demanding action against the warden for allegedly assaulting their children in Odisha’s Nuapada district.

an association of parents and guardians staged an agitation outside the Collectorate alleging that a Class 4 student was thrashed with chappal by one of the teachers at the Anwesha hostel in Khariar Road of Nuapada district in Odisha. The incident came to the fore when the child narrated the ordeal to his father a few days back.

According to sources, Laxman Mahanand, son of Shobharam Mahanand of Gotama village studies in Class IV of a primary school and stays in the government’s Anwesha hostel at Khariar Road. On November 14, Laxman had come home with his father.

On finding that Laxman was remaining depressed and aloof, Shobharam enquired whether he was having any problem in the school. The minor boy revealed to him that he was recently beaten up by the warden of the hostel, who is a lady teacher in the school, with chappal.

Speaking to media persons, Shobharam said, “When I brought Laxman from the hostel a few days back, he looked dull and sick. On being asked, he narrated the physical assault by the lady teacher.”

Shobharam told his neighbours and others in the village about the ordeal of his son. Agitated by the teacher’s behaviour, irate villagers on Saturday took out a rally to the district collector’s office. They staged a demonstration there raising slogans against the district administration.

Later, the villagers met district welfare officer Nanda Kishore Tandi and raised their demand for suspension of the warden.

In his reaction, Tandi told the media that he was aware of the incident and has asked the additional superintendent of the hostel to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. On the basis of the inquiry report, we necessary action would be taken who would be found responsible for the incident, he added.
