Bhubaneswar: A tattoo on the forearm, a navel piercing, or brightly colored hair—these newfound aesthetics often trigger assumptions of recklessness, rebellion, or a desperate need to stand out. But for Gen Z, these choices speak to something much deeper: their identity.

Several young people share rich stories and deeply personal intentions behind their body modifications, viewing them as forms of self-expression, therapy, manifestation, or personal style statements. While they remain hyper-aware of societal judgment, they own their choices with quiet confidence.

Aditya, a tattoo artist and piercing professional at House of Tattoos, notes that Gen Z is a revolutionary generation with absolute clarity in their choices. “Tattoos and piercings are a form of therapy that engraves stories onto the skin,” he explains, adding that these procedures are entirely safe when professionals prioritise hygiene and open client communication.

Arko, a tattoo artist at Ink Stories, believes societal judgment should simply be ignored. “People often get portrait tattoos to pay tribute to their parents, siblings, or loved ones,” he says, offering a simple piece of advice: tune out public opinion and make choices that bring you happiness.

Hair specialist Vaseem from Urbana Salon advises against box dyes, recommending professional colouring instead since home dyes often contain harsh chemicals and metals. “It isn’t necessary to constantly try new hairstyles, but it is essential to care for your hair post-treatment,” he says.

He also cautions against chemical treatments when there’s an underlying health issue, pregnancy and hormonal imbalances.

As social media, global culture, and evolving trends reshape youth culture, more young people are embracing tattoos, body piercings, and bold hair transformations. But are these choices merely a passing trend?

Interestingly, body art isn’t entirely new. In Odisha, a state known for its deeply rooted agrarian and tribal heritage, indigenous communities in Koraput, Kandhamal, and Ganjam have practiced body piercing, tattooing, and distinct hair styling for generations. Tribal women, for instance, have long applied red and yellow clay to their hair, not only as a cultural practice, but to protect themselves from the heat.

What differentiates Gen Z is not the act itself, but the freedom with which they approach it. Raised in an era defined by digital connectivity and global exposure, this generation feels empowered to experiment with appearance and identity. While stereotypes persist, young people contend that external style shouldn’t be mistaken for character, a powerful gentle reminder to celebrate individual self-expression.

Behind every tattoo, piercing, and hair color lies a narrative, a conscious choice, and a piece of someone’s identity. As these forms of self-expression become increasingly mainstream, it’s time for the broader conversation to shift from judgment to understanding.
