There are moments in diplomacy that transcend protocol and symbolism. They become opportunities to reimagine relationships and to chart a common future. The forthcoming State Visit of the President of India Droupadi Murmu to the Republic of North Macedonia is one such moment.
As India and North Macedonia prepare to mark this important occasion, we are reminded that meaningful partnerships are not defined by geographical proximity alone. They are built on shared values, mutual respect and a common belief that cooperation can deliver greater prosperity and security for our peoples.
India and North Macedonia share much in common. Both are vibrant democracies. Both have embraced diversity as a source of strength. Both believe in dialogue over confrontation and in international cooperation as the way to address today’s global challenges. This visit reflects the growing importance both countries place on each other. It also sends a clear message that India sees North Macedonia as a valued partner in Southeast Europe, as North Macedonia increasingly engages with one of the world’s most dynamic economies.
India is experiencing an extraordinary period of transformation. Home to more than 1.4 billion people, it has become one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and a global hub for innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. From digital public infrastructure and fintech to space technology, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, India’s development journey is creating opportunities for partnerships across the globe. These opportunities are highly relevant to North Macedonia.
Our economic relationship has grown steadily in recent years, but it has only begun to realise its full potential. There is ample scope to deepen cooperation in pharmaceuticals, information technology, agriculture, automotive components, renewable energy, tourism, education and manufacturing. Indian businesses are increasingly seeking reliable partners in Europe, and North Macedonia offers many advantages—a strategic location, an open investment climate, a skilled workforce and strong regional connectivity. Likewise, companies from North Macedonia can benefit from greater access to India’s vast and expanding market, one of the world’s largest consumer economies.
Technology and Innovation
India’s experience in developing digital public infrastructure has attracted global attention. Affordable digital payments, secure digital identity, online public services and financial inclusion have transformed the daily lives of hundreds of millions of Indians. These experiences offer valuable lessons and opportunities for international cooperation, particularly as countries seek to harness technology to drive inclusive growth.
Healthcare
Known as the ‘pharmacy of the world’, India supplies high-quality, affordable medicines to countries across every continent. Indian pharmaceutical companies have earned international trust through innovation, quality and affordability. As healthcare systems continue to evolve worldwide, closer cooperation in pharmaceuticals, medical technology and healthcare services can deliver tangible benefits to both countries.
Beyond conventional Western medicine, the ancient Indian wisdom of Ayurveda is also highly relevant in modern Europe as a complementary approach to chronic disease management, stress reduction, and preventive care. It bridges the gap between conventional medicine and holistic wellness by emphasising personalised, nature-based lifestyle plans. Many Europeans are blending ancient Indian knowledge with local resources to create “European Ayurveda”.
Education
Every year, students from across the globe choose India for higher education in medicine, engineering, information technology and the sciences. Government scholarship programmes, professional training and academic exchanges foster lasting friendships that often form the strongest foundation for bilateral relations. We hope to see even more young people from North Macedonia discover India—not only as a destination for learning, but also as a country of ideas, innovation and opportunity.
Culture
Indian cinema, yoga, classical dance and cuisine have found enthusiastic audiences worldwide, including in North Macedonia. At the same time, India’s people are eager to learn more about North Macedonia’s rich cultural heritage, including its music, traditions, archaeological treasures and natural beauty. Each cultural exchange deepens understanding and reminds us that diversity is worth celebrating.
Tourism
As more Indians travel abroad than ever before, North Macedonia has an opportunity to position itself as a destination offering stunning landscapes, historic sites, warm hospitality and authentic experiences. Equally, India welcomes visitors to experience one of the world’s oldest civilisations alongside one of its youngest and most innovative societies.
Broader shared purpose.
Today’s world faces multiple challenges—climate change, energy and food security, public health and rapid technological change. No country can address these issues alone. India believes that international cooperation, respect for sovereignty and dialogue remain the best way forward.
This conviction is embodied in the ancient Indian ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—”The World is One Family.” It is more than a philosophical concept; it is a practical approach to international relations, recognising that our futures are interconnected and that lasting progress depends on collaboration.
The President’s visit offers an opportunity to translate these shared principles into practical cooperation. New agreements may be signed, new partnerships launched, and new avenues of collaboration explored. But the visit’s true success will be measured not only by official documents but also by stronger business partnerships, closer academic exchanges, deeper cultural understanding, and more frequent contact between our citizens.
Diplomatic relations ultimately thrive because of people. Entrepreneurs who invest, researchers who collaborate, artists who inspire, students who study abroad, and tourists who discover new cultures all become ambassadors of friendship in their own way.
Beginning of an exciting new chapter
India and Southeast Europe have shared historical connections for over two thousand years, though these links were often indirect, mediated by broader trade and political networks. In antiquity, Indian spices, textiles, gemstones, and other luxury goods reached Southeast Europe via the Spice Route and Mediterranean trade routes. Subsequently, commercial exchanges continued through intermediary merchants, fostering limited but sustained contact. In the modern era, relations gained greater political significance during the Cold War, and India maintained friendly relations with other countries in the region through cooperation in education, science, and industry.
Today, India and Southeast European countries enjoy growing ties across trade, investment, education, tourism, and cultural exchange. The relationship reflects a gradual evolution from historical trade links to a broader strategic partnership grounded in shared interests and multilateral cooperation.
The President’s visit to North Macedonia is an opportunity to celebrate what we have already achieved and, even more importantly, to look ahead with confidence. The potential of our partnership far exceeds what we have realised to date. Together, India and North Macedonia can build a relationship that contributes not only to the prosperity of our two nations but also to the region and to a more connected, peaceful, and cooperative world.
That is the promise of this visit and the opportunity before us.
