IMA Suspends Membership Of Under-Scanner Ex-RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh
Kolkata: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday suspended the membership of former RG Kar Medical College principal Dr Sandip Ghosh, who is under severe scrutiny over the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run Kolkata hospital.
Action was initiated after IMA’s disciplinary committee took note of multiple allegations against Ghosh, including charges of financial irregularities levelled by one of his former colleagues.
In its suspension order, IMA noted the victim’s parents’ “grievances against you (Dr Sandip Ghosh) in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner.”
IMA further said that its Bengal branch and some doctors’ associations have sought action against Ghosh.
“The disciplinary committee of IMA HQs has unanimously decided to suspend you forthwith from the membership of Indian Medical Association,” the order read.
Even as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the heinous crime, Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a money-laundering case in the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital during Ghosh’s tenure as principal.

Protesting doctors have been asking why the state government has been so generous with Ghosh.
He had resigned as RK Kar Medical College principal on August 12, three days after the semi-naked body of the 31-year-old junior doctor was found at the seminar hall. But within hours, he was appointed principal of Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital, another state-run medical college.
Following outrage and continued protests, the state government revoked Ghosh’s appointment as principal of Calcutta National Medical College.
