Bhubaneswar: The impact of Cyclone Jawad is likely to be over by Sunday evening, Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena said on Saturday.

“Wind speed is likely to remain between 60-70 kmph when the storm reaches the coast of Puri tomorrow. Ganjam, Puri and Khurda are likely to witness very heavy rainfall today. Incessant rain is likely to damage vegetables and paddy crops,” he said.

He further informed that only 1500 people have been shifted to safer places as the wind speed is expected to reduce further. “Cyclone damage assessment will be done within 7 days,” he added.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 6 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centered at 8.30 am, about 210 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 320 km south of Gopalpur, 390 km south-southwest of Puri and 470 km south-southwest of Paradip in Odisha.

It is likely to move nearly northwards, weaken gradually during the next 12 hours and then move north-northeastwards along Odisha coast reaching Puri around Sunday noon as a Deep Depression. Subsequently, it is likely to weaken further and continue to move north-northeastwards along Odisha coast towards West Bengal, it added.

The Met has issued Red warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places with extremely heavy falls at one or places (more than 20 cm) in Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur on Saturday. It has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall (Orange warning) at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Gajapati, and Jajpur. Heavy rainfall (Yellow warning) is also likely at isolated places in Kandhamal, Rayagada, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj till 8.30 am on Sunday.

On December 5, Orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Puri. Besides, heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places over the districts of Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, and Ganjam.

Squally winds, speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely to prevail along and off North Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts during the next 12 hours. It will gradually increase to 55-65 gusting to 75 kmph till Sunday morning and drop to 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph by afternoon. It would decrease thereafter gradually.
