Bhubaneswar: The Pathology Department of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medical sciences of SOA Deemed to be University here, has installed a Philips Pathology Scanner SG 300 which can scan 60 slides per hour and help in fast diagnosis of complicated and ambiguous cases.

The scanner is a tool for preserving pathology slides in software format lessening the use of glass slides in reporting and referral purpose and will be immensely helpful in follow-up of the patient, Prof (Dr) Debahuti Mohapatra, Head of Department of Pathology, said after the new equipment was unveiled on Friday.

Prof (Dr) Mohapatra said it would greatly help in holding tele-conferences with reputed medical centres thereby reducing diagnostic pitfalls. It will have a storage facility for five years, she said adding this model had been installed in a medical centre in Odisha for the first time while it was the second hospital in the country to acquire the equipment.

Prof Pradipta Kumar Nanda, Vice-Chancellor of SOA, said it would enable faster diagnosis and improve record keeping. It will help in enhancing the quality of teaching, seminars and research, he said.

Prof (Dr) Sanghamitra Mishra, Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, said that the new acquisition would greatly help in resolving complicated and difficult cases while enhancing the accuracy of the diagnosis. “It will raise the level of patient care and research,” she said.

Prof (Dr) Pushparaj Samantasinghar, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said the advanced machine would reduce the turn-around time for diagnosis and help in the learning and training of post-graduate students.
