New Delhi: After Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was targeted by US-Israeli joint strikes in Tehran on Saturday, Iran confirmed the news of the Supreme Leader’s death in the early hours of Sunday.
India had not officially condemned Khamenei’s killing for four days, before finally doing so on Thursday.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met the Iran ambassador in Delhi and signed the condolence book for Khamenei’s death.
Also on Thursday, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Iranian counterpart Syed Abbas Araghchi.
Jaishankar confirmed the interaction through a post on social media, the second time he had a talk with Araghchi since the US-Israeli conflict started five days ago.
Misri and Jaishankar’s interactions with Iranian officials come hours after Iran’s Foreign Minister wrote about US “atrocity at sea”, mentioning a warship which was a guest of the Indian Navy being destroyed by an American submarine in international waters.
“The U.S. has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning. Mark my words: The U.S. will come to bitterly regret precedent it has set,” Araghchi posted on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a joint press conference with Finland President Alexander Stubb in Delhi on Thursday, said that military actions won’t help in providing permanent solutions and urged dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts.
