Win Eludes India In Azlan Shah Hockey
Ipoh: The young Indian team failed to register victory yet again, as they lost their third pool match 2-4 against the mighty Aussies at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh on Tuesday.
Though dominant in the first quarter, India failed to change the scoreboard in its favour. Aggressive Australia, on the other hand, took the lead at the 28th minute as Mark Knowles struck the first goal, off a penalty stroke.
A minute after Odia lad Amit Rohidas earned a green card, Australia chance upon and doubled the lead, courtesy Aran Zaleswski.
Committing foul yet again, Amit earned a yellow card which handed him a suspension of five minutes. Australia, once again pressed its attack and scored two quick goals within three minutes. The third goal came from Daniel Beale, who swept away an easy shot, despite the presence of two defenders. The fourth goal was hammered by Blake Govers, off a rebound in penalty corner.
Just as Australia was settling for a 4-0 win, Ramandeep reduced the goal difference, striking two consecutive goals.
Though India looked to further lower the gap, Australia stood firm, denying further attacks.
In women’s hockey, the Indian team registered their second consecutive victory of their South Korea Tour as they defeated hosts South Korea by 3-2 in the second match of their five-match series at the Jinchun National Athletic Centre in Incheon, South Korea. The goals for India were scored by Poonam Rani (6′), skipper Rani (27′) and Gurjit Kaur (32′) while Yurim Lee (10′) and Jungeun Seo (31′) scored for the hosts.
