Washington: India has strongly objected to The New York Times over its use of the term “Pakistani Kashmir” in a report on violence and local elections in the region, saying the description was inaccurate and misleading.

The Indian Embassy in the United States said Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are and will remain an integral and inalienable part of India. It also accused Pakistan of illegally occupying parts of the two Union Territories and of continuing to use violence against the people living there, as reported by The Statesman.

India Rejects NYT Wording

The objection was directed at the phrase “Pakistani Kashmir”, which appeared in the headline of a recent New York Times report.

Calling the wording “misleading and incorrect”, the embassy said in a post on X: “There is no Pakistan Kashmir, only Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

The embassy doubled down on India’s position, saying Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh “have been, are and will always remain an integral and unalienable part of India”.

It also accused Pakistan of illegally occupying parts of the territories and of continuing to “use violence against the occupied people”.

NYT Report On Mirpur Violence

The New York Times report detailed the latest unrest and local elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

It said clashes broke out in Mirpur after security forces confronted members of the Joint Awami Action Committee, a civil rights group that was protesting alleged police excesses.

The report said at least two people died from gunshot wounds in the latest round of violence.

It also cited the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, which urged an impartial probe into the deaths.

Claims Remain Unverified

The newspaper said the unrest, which has lasted for weeks, had claimed multiple lives and disrupted voting across the region.

The Joint Awami Action Committee alleged that several of its members were killed in clashes with police.

The New York Times said those allegations could not be independently confirmed and had not been officially verified.

India says it retains sovereign jurisdiction over the entire region and views Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as inseparable parts of the country.
