Tehran: Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization has accused the United States and Israel of launching a projectile strike on the Bushehr nuclear power plant on Tuesday with the munition landing inside the facility’s secured perimeter.
In an official statement, the organisation labeled the incident as “another attack by what it called the ‘American-Zionist enemy.’” It specified that “the projectile struck within the plant’s enclosure.” Iranian authorities reported preliminary assessments revealing “no financial losses, technical damage, or casualties,” emphasizing that “all sections of the facility remain safe and operational.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) swiftly addressed the claim in a statement posted on X, confirming it had received notification from Iran. “The IAEA has been informed by Iran that another projectile hit the premises of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant today,” the agency wrote. “According to Iran, there was no damage to the NPP itself nor injuries to staff, and the condition of the plant is normal. IAEA DG Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterates call for maximum restraint to avoid nuclear safety risks during conflict.”
This is the second reported strike near Iran’s sole operational nuclear power plant in a week. The UN nuclear watchdog disclosed that a projectile had struck the Bushehr premises on March 17.
Russia’s Tass news agency, citing Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev, provided further details on the earlier event, reporting that the strike “hit the area adjacent to the metrology service building located at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant site.” Likhachev noted this occurred “in close proximity to the operating power unit,” according to Tass.
