Guwahati: Early trends in the Assam election results suggest that BJP leader and incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is ahead in the Jalukbari Assembly constituency, leading over Congress candidate Bidisha Neog, according to preliminary reports.

The ruling NDA is ahead in 48 seats in Assam, while the Congress is leading in 11 constituencies, the Election Commission has said. The EC has released trends for 63 of the 126 constituencies in the state, with the BJP in the lead in 39, while its alliance partners—the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF)—are ahead in three and six seats, respectively, at the time of filing this report.

BJP leaders have voiced confidence that Sarma is set to return for a second term, as the party aims for a hat‑trip in Assam, a state central to its northeastern strategy. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Sarma had won the Jalukbari seat with 130,762 votes, capturing a 73.52% vote share and defeating Romen Chandra Borthakur of the Congress by a margin of 92,677 votes. He had earlier contested the same seat in 2011 as a Congress candidate.

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia said the party was confident of victory, crediting it to the public’s trust in the BJP and in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “We are winning and we have always been saying this. It is people’s trust in the BJP and PM Modi’s leadership. We will continue our development works,” he said.

On being asked about West Bengal, Saikia added, “We will form the government in West Bengal as well. It is Mamata’s gunda raj that is being thrown out by the people of Bengal.”

“The people of Assam have united under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma because Assam needs development,” BJP candidate from Bihpuria, Bhupen Bora, told IANS.

The result of the election will decide whether the BJP‑led NDA achieves a third consecutive term or the Congress takes control in Assam. EVMs now hold the electoral fates of 722 candidates from the state’s 126 assembly constituencies, which will be unsealed at 40 counting centres spread across all 35 districts.

The five constituencies that cover the core urban and suburban areas of Guwahati after delimitation are the Dispur Assembly constituency, the Dimoria Assembly constituency (SC reserved), the New Guwahati Assembly constituency, the Guwahati Central Assembly constituency, and the Jalukbari Assembly constituency.

Exit polls have indicated a historic third successive term for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam. Most exit analyses peg the incumbent alliance at over 80 seats, while the Congress‑led ‘ASOM’ alliance is projected to bag around 25 to 35 seats.
