Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested the owner of a Jatra (theatre) group for allegedly duping an actress of more than Rs 8 lakh and threatening her life in Bhubaneswar.
In her complaint filed at Lingaraj police station in the city on September 26, the actress, Manorama Dash of Dhenkanal district stated that she had joined Om Siva Shakti Jatra group on the promise of Rs 80,000 monthly remuneration by its owner Amaresh Sahu of Cuttack. Amaresh had had paid Rs 50,000 as advance also.
After one month of performing in the Jatra group, Amaresh told Manoram to be a partner of the group and assured her of sharing the profit equally. She agreed to the proposal and took responsibility of the Jatra Party.
Manorama managed the theatre group’s affairs for five months and even paid remuneration to its staff from her pocket on the direction of the owner. Amaresh also allegedly took lakhs of rupees from her for his personal use with a promise to return the amount with interest during the period.
But Amaresh did not return the money and did not respond to her requests to return the money. Subsequently, Manorama left the Jatra group.
Later, when she contacted Amaresh repeatedly to get back her money, the latter not only abused her in bad language but also threatened to kill her.
With n way left, Manorama filed the complaint against Amaresh fearing threat to her life. She mentioned in the complaint that Amaresh had cheated her of Rs 8,25,400.
Following investigation into the complaint, the police arrested Amaresh and forwarded him to the court on Sunday.
