Bhubaneswar: Thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in Odisha for five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday.
Orange warning of thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40- 50kmph has been issued for one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts on May 18.
Strong winds can damage standing crops, banana trees, loose/unsecured/vulnerable structures in these districts. People have been advised to move to safer places during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning.
Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Nuapada and Balangir.
The weather agency has also warned of hot and humid conditions at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.
On May 19, thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Gajapati. Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Balangir and Nuapada.
There is also a warning for hot and humid conditions at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.
The yellow warning for thunderstorm continues for 3 more days during which the day temperature is unlikely to witness any large change.
