Lockdown Blues: Odia Migrant Worker ‘Beaten To Death’ By Surat Cops

Bhubaneswar: An Odia migrant worker was allegedly beaten to death by police out to enforce the COVID-19 lockdown in Surat, Gujarat.

The deceased was identified as Satya Swain, a native of Kullada village near Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district. He had been working in Surat for the past two years.

According to reports, some Odia workers were loitering outside the house in which they stayed on Thursday evening. They scampered inside when they saw a police van approaching.

Police, however, barged into the house and indiscriminately beat up the workers. They were then hauled up to Amroli police station for reportedly violating social distancing norms.

The fatally-injured Satya collapsed at the police station. He reportedly died by the time an ambulance was called to ferry him to a hospital.

Satya, who was in his 30s, is survived by his wife and a five-year-old mentally-challenged son.
