New Delhi: Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Monday defended the country’s handling of the COVID-19 situation.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha on the first day of Monsoon Session, he pointed out that India has one of the lowest death rates in the world.
The lockdown, he claimed, has helped prevent up to 29 lakh additional coronavirus cases.
“With our endeavour to manage COVID-19, India has been able to limit its cases and deaths to 3,328 per million and 55 per million of population, respectively, which is one of the lowest in the world as compared to similarly affected countries,” Harsh Vardhan said.
He informed the House that Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, Kerala and Gujarat have reported the most cases, with more than 1 lakh each.
India has crossed the 48-lakh mark in total number of coronavirus cases, while 79,722 people have lost their lives to this virus so far.
