Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has formed over Southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.
The system, which formed on Tuesday morning under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, is likely to become more marked and move west-northwestwards during the next 24 hours.
Under the influence of the system, many parts of Odisha are likely to experience widespread rainfall over the next three days. The southwest monsoon is also expected to gain momentum again, with favourable conditions for its further advancement into more parts of Odisha and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh.
The weather agency has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in various parts of the state. Districts like Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rain on Tuesday. Wind speeds may also range between 30 to 40 kmph in some areas.
The intensity and spread of rainfall across Odisha may increase, especially as the monsoon current gains steam. The IMD has advised people in vulnerable regions to remain alert and avoid low-lying or waterlogged areas.
Rainfall activity is likely to continue till June 19, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Authorities have been asked to stay prepared for any eventualities arising from heavy rains and strong winds.
