Berhampur: Police have arrested a man for death of his wife allegedly due to dowry torture in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

According to police sources, the victim, Mamata Sahu of Malabhanja village under Digapahandi police station had got married to Tophan Bhuyan of Gangadahani village under Purusottampur village in 2017. At the time of marriage, Mamata’s family had given dowry of gold ornaments, household articles besides Rs 50,000 in cash.

Soon after the marriage, Mamata’s in-laws allegedly started torturing her demanding more dowry from her parents. Later, Tophan went to Mumbai along with Mamata in connection with work. On July 17, Tophan called Mamata’s parents over phone from Mumbai and said that she had committed suicide.

Mamata’s mother Shobha immediately informed some of her relatives staying in Mumbai to enquire into the matter. Her relatives went to Tophan’s rented house at Vinoba Bhave Nagar. On making queries there, they suspected something foul about Mamata’s death and informed Shobha accordingly.
