New Delhi: A man set himself on fire near Parliament here on Wednesday.
Police personnel on duty nearby doused the fire and rushed the man to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
He sustained 90 per cent burn injuries and is said to be in very critical condition. The man, identified as Jitendra, hailing from Uttar Pradesh’s Bagpat, used a petrol-like substance to self-immolate, reported News18.com.
According to eyewitnesses, the man set himself on fire in the park in front of the Parliament and charged towards the main gate. Cops and securitypersons chased him and did their best to put out the fire.
Delhi Police said that the self-immolation attempt could be a case of personal enmity.
“Today one person probably Jitendra of Uttar Pradesh’s Bagpat set himself on fire in roundabout rail Bhavan. The local police and railway police along with some civil persons immediately extinguished the fire and the person was sent to hospital. The issue as we can decipher is probably related and personal enmity in Bagpat. Further investigation is on,” said a statement from Delhi Police.
