Kolkata: Wajahat Khan, whose police complaint led to the arrest of social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli, has allegedly gone missing.
Wajahat’s father claimed his son had not been seen since Sunday night, and that the family had been receiving threatening phone calls ever since Sharmistha was nabbed from Gurugram by Kolkata Police.
“My son is innocent and secular. He cannot insult Hinduism. We have been receiving threats since Sharmistha’s arrest,” his father Saadat Khan said in an interview with Aaj Tak.
A police complaint has been filed against Wajahat by Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad, accusing him of making derogatory and inflammatory remarks against the Hindu community on social media platforms.
Responding to a question about a complaint filed against his son for allegedly insulting Hindus, Saadat said his son’s profile may have been hacked.
Wajahat, he claimed, was deeply disturbed by the flood of abusive and threatening calls he received in the last few days, accusing him of ruining Sharmistha’s life. Saadat said he, too, received threatening calls and was verbally abused.
Sharmistha was arrested on May 30 for communally-charged posts after Operation Sindoor and using abusive language.
Her arrest sparked widespread outrage, with many demanding her release.
