Kolkata: Vowing to back teachers who were sacked from job following the Supreme Court verdict, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she had not accepted the Supreme Court’s decision. Upholding Calcutta High Court’s order, the apex court had annulled the appointment of over 25,000 teaching and non-teaching staff in Bengal after irregularities in the appointment process surfaced in the alleged school jobs-for-cash scam.

Addressing a section of affected teachers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, Mamata said she might be jailed for her stance but affirmed that her government was standing in support of the teachers.

The top court’s ruling was in connection with the Calcutta High Court’s order cancelling of the appointments by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in 2016. The SC had observed that the appointments were vitiated by fraud.

Addressing a section of impacted teachers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, Mamata said that she might be jailed for her stance and affirmed that her government stands by their side.

Mamata also announced that her government had “separate plans” to ensure eligible candidates do not lose their jobs.
