Bhubaneswar: The story of Aishwarya Rutuparna Pradhan is one of resilience, education, and the courage to embrace identity. Born as Ratikant Pradhan at Kanabagiri village in Kandhamal district, Aishwarya grew up facing questions and discrimination over her gender identity. Teachers’ remarks and social stigma often made her school years difficult, yet she remained determined to pursue her studies.

Education as Pathway

After completing school, Aishwarya moved to Bhubaneswar for higher education. She earned a postgraduate degree in Public Administration and later studied English Journalism at the prestigious Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC).

College life was also not without challenges with Aishwarya enduring jokes and discrimination. But her focus on education and career goals never wavered. Supported by her mother and sister, she continued to build a foundation for public service.

Breaking Barriers

In 2010, Aishwarya cleared the Odisha Financial Service examination and began working as a Commercial Tax Officer. Her professional journey marked the start of a career dedicated to governance and administration.

Embracing Identity

April 2014 became a turning point when Aishwarya publicly embraced her identity, choosing to wear sarees and live authentically. While the decision drew questions and reactions, she stood firm. Her courage brought visibility to transgender representation in government service.

Media reports have since described her as the country’s first transgender IAS officer, a symbol of progress and inclusion.

Story of Determination

From a small village in Odisha to the corridors of public service, Aishwarya’s journey highlights how education, perseverance, and self‑belief can overcome social barriers. Her life continues to inspire, not only as a personal triumph but also as a beacon for inclusivity in India’s administrative framework.
