Mumbai: Akshay Kumar, whose latest release ‘Bhooth Bangla’ registered a strong opening on April 17, opened up about the risks he faced while performing high-octane stunts in his action films.
During a candid conversation with Subhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, Akshay reflected on how stunt work in earlier years had minimal safety measures.
Unlike today’s heavy reliance on VFX and advanced technology, many sequences back then had to be performed live, often involving real risk.
He also recalled a near-fatal incident while shooting ‘Sainik’, where a seemingly routine stunt between two buildings almost went wrong.
Describing the moment, the actor said the shot became physically exhausting midway, leaving him unsure if he would be able to complete the jump safely.
“Ek baar Sainik mein hua tha. Ek building se doosri building jaate-jaate mera haath thak gaya tha, and I thought mein chala jaunga, ek building se dusre building. Tab kuch nahi tha, VFX bhi nahi tha, khud hi sab karna padta tha. International Khiladi mein, boat ke scene mein mera aadha shareer cut jaata. Samne se catamaran aa raha tha, aur meri boat uske beech se jaane wali thi, main poora cut ho jaata, lekin bach gaya,” Akshay recalled.
“Once, during International Khiladi, in a boat scene, half of my body could have been cut off. A catamaran was coming from the front, and my boat was about to pass right through it, I could have been completely sliced, but I survived. Jab maine Khiladi 786 mein jump maara tha, mujhe hot air balloon par dive karna tha, tab bhi bach gaya. (When I made that jump in Khiladi 786, I had to dive onto a hot air balloon—even then, I somehow survived),” the actor added.
Despite several close calls, Akshay revealed that his approach at home remains relaxed.
He shared that his wife, author and former actor Twinkle Khanna, has grown accustomed to the risks that come with his profession and no longer reacts with panic.
According to him, Twinkle simply trusts that he will return home safely after his shoots.
On the professional front, Akshay continues to remain committed to action-driven cinema. He was recently seen in ‘Bhooth Bangla’, which reportedly witnessed a mishap during a stunt sequence.
A behind-the-scenes video shared by the makers showed the actor performing a mid-air kick during an intense shot before losing balance on landing and sustaining an injury.
The film also stars Paresh Rawal, Asrani, Rajpal Yadav and Wamiqa Gabbi, blending elements of comedy and horror.
