Bhubaneswar: The mercury soared past 40°C at 16 places in Odisha amid the prevailing heatwave conditions on Wednesday.
Jharsuguda at 45.4°C continued to record the highest day temperature in the state. The industrial town had recorded the highest-ever temperature of 46.2°C for April and was the hottest place in the country the previous day. It had sizzled at 45.4°C on Monday and was the second hottest place in the country after Chandrapur in Maharashtra, which recorded 45.6°C.
The other places in Odisha which recorded temperature above 40°C include Titlagarh (44°C), Sambalpur and Boudh at 43.8°C each, Balangir (43.7°C), Sundargarh and Hirakud at 43.4°C each, Sonepur (43.2°C), Angul (42.9°C), Bhawanipatna (42.5°C), Talcher and Rourkela at 42.4°C each, Bargarh (42.2°C), Nuapada (42°C), Paralakhemundi (41°C) and Baripada (40.2°C).
The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 37.6°C each.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange warning of severe heatwave for Jharsuguda and heatwave for Boudh, Balangir, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Sonepur. Yellow warning was sounded for Nuapada, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Deogarh and Angul districts for the day.
The state will continue to experience severe heatwave, heatwave, hot and humid and warm night conditions till April 26, during which the mercury may soar to 43°C in Jharsuguda, Angul, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh and Bargarh.

The mercury levels are likely to fall thereafter by 2-4°C during the subsequent 3 days, it added.
