Bhubaneswar: Already boiling under blistering heatwave conditions, Odisha is set to encounter harsher days with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting rise in day temperature by 2 to 3 degree Celsius in many places during the next two days.

In its midday bulletin on Wednesday, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar also issued orange warning for several areas for two days from Thursday and yellow warning for two more days thereafter.

It said that due to prevailing northwesterly/westerly dry air and high solar insolation, day temperature is likely to rise by 2°C to 3°C at many places in the state during next 48 hrs.

Consequently, maximum temperature (day temperature) is likely to be more than 40°C or above at many places of the state and likely to be above normal by 3 to 5°C in some areas during next three days.

In view of the severe heatwave conditions, the MeT Centre advised people to take precautionary measure while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm.

The state has been witnessing blistering heatwave conditions for past couple of days and the warning continues till April 21. The mercury had soared past 34 degree Celsius by 8:30 am with Bhubaneswar recording 33.64 degree on Wednesday. Bhawanipatna was the hottest at 34.8 degree Celsius.

The  weather agency has issued yellow warning and said heatwave conditions may prevail at one or two places over Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi and Bargarh districts on April 17.

Hot and humid weather is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts.

Issuing orange warning for two days from April 18, it said heatwave to severe heatwave conditions may prevail at one or two places of Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Gajapati, and Nayagarh.

Similarly yellow warning was issued for several other districts. Heatwave conditions may prevail at one or two places of Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, Boudh, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Bargarh on April 18.

Yellow warning of heatwave condition has been issued for one or two places in Keonjhar, Dhenkanal,Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Angul, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh on April 19.

The impact of heatwave is likely to lessen in the subsequent days. Heatwave condition may prevail at one or two placesin Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Angul, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh on April 20. There is also a warning of thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts. Light rain may also occur at isolated places.

On April 21, heatwave condition may prevail at one or two places in Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Kalahandi, Angul, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh. Hot and humid weather is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Light to moderate is likely in some parts of the state thereafter.

 

Notably, 18 places had recorded temperature of 41 degree Celsius or more on Tuesday. Baripada was the hottest place in the state for second day at 43.6 degree Celsius, followed by Nuapada and Parlakhemundi at 42.4 degree Celsius each and Talcher and Boudh at 42 degree Celsius each. Bhubaneswar recorded 41.9 degree Celsius.
