New Delhi: The body of the 19-year-old college student from Tripura, reported missing from the Paryavaran Complex area in South Delhi since July 7, was recovered from the Yamuna River beneath the Geeta Colony flyover.
Sneha Debnath, from Sabroom in Tripura, was a student of the Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College in Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. Prima facie, it is being suspected that she took her own life. Further investigation is underway.
Delhi Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel had been searching the river between Nigambodh Ghat and Noida since locals reported spotting a young woman standing on the Signature Bridge shortly before sunrise on July 8.
After the body was fished out, authorities had suspected it to be that of a 24-year-old woman. After matching the features and clothes, the police realised that it was Sneha.
Meanwhile, the family had also handed over a note to the police that Sneha was contemplating taking her own life by jumping off the Signature Bridge. Sneha was apparently under stress for the last few months. On the morning of her disappearance, she reportedly sent a farewell email and WhatsApp messages to close friends, raising alarm.
While forensic confirmation and post-mortem procedures are going on, initial reports suggest drowning as the likely cause of death. The investigation will try to determine the sequence of events and whether any external factors were involved.
Sneha had last spoken to her family back in Tripura on July 7. Sneha had then said that she was on her way to a railway station to see off a friend. Her phone was switched off after that. Later, when the family spoke to the friend she was to see off, they came to know that the two hadn’t met that day.
Later, it was a cab driver who said that he had dropped Sneha off near the Signature Bridge. The family also realised that their daughter had not made any bank transactions for the last four months. They wondered how Sneha survived during that time.
