Bhubaneswar: In a welcome relief for Odisha battling intense heat and humidity, the southwest monsoon advanced into several northern and coastal districts, including Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, and Balasore, on Friday.
“The southwest monsoon has further advanced into entire northwest Bay of Bengal, some more parts of westcentral Bay of Bengal, West Bengal & Bihar, and some parts of Odisha and Jharkhand, today the 12th June, 2026,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its afternoon bulletin.
It further stated that the northern Limit of monsoon is currently passing Paradip and Baripada, which indicates that the rain-bearing weather system entered the state through the northernmost part, an unusual development as it typically advances from the southern region, particularly over Malkangiri and Koraput, before gradually spreading northward to cover the rest of the state.
“Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal & westcentral Bay of Bengal, some more parts of Odisha, Jharkhand & Bihar, and some parts of Chhattisgarh during the next 2-3 days,” it added.
The monsoon’s arrival aligns with normal onset timelines for Odisha, typically between June 10–15, offering hope for agricultural activities, allowing farmers to begin Kharif sowing, and a break from the recent hot and humid spell. Residents can anticipate increased thunderstorm activity and rainfall in the short term as the system strengthens.
According to the afternoon bulletin, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall may occur in Odisha on June 12-13. Isolated to scattered rainfall is also likely in the state from June 14-18. Isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) may continue from June 14-16.
Isolated heavy rainfall may also occur in Odisha from June 12-14. Thundersquall (wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph) is also likely on June 12-13.
