New Delhi: Torrential monsoon downpours across Mumbai and several states on Sunday left at least six people dead, swamped neighbourhoods and triggered a series of rescue operations.

Two to three informal tenements at Chawl No. 5, Janta Nagar in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area, gave way around 8:30 pm during heavy rain, officials said.

A three-storey structure — reportedly built last year — toppled onto three adjoining houses.

Maharashtra AIMIM General Secretary Ateeque Ahmad Khan said rescue teams pulled five children and a woman from the rubble. “The incident occurred around 8 or 8:30 PM. A three-story building — which had been constructed just last year — collapsed onto three adjacent houses. Five children and one woman from the same family were trapped underneath; they have been rescued,” he said.

Authorities confirmed at least six fatalities in the broader rain-related incidents across the city, as reported by Asia News Network.

Schools Shut; Orange Alert Amid Heavy Rain

Mumbai logged over 265 mm of rain in the city and more than 227 mm in suburban areas in the 24 hours to 6 pm on Sunday. With the India Meteorological Department issuing an Orange Alert, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday while urging residents to venture out only if necessary.

Tree Fall Kills Man In Kurla

In a separate incident, a 63-year-old man, Yunus Kundawala, died after a tree toppled onto a shop near Hindi BMC School at Gomes Gown Building in Kamani, Kurla (West). He was taken to Fauzia Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, BEST staff and BMC teams conducted rescue and clearance work at the scene.

Mayor Orders Audits, Offers Aid

Mayor Ritu Tawde announced Rs 5 lakh in financial assistance for the victim’s family and said an inquiry would probe why the tree had not been identified as hazardous. “We will not support the municipal administration in any wrongdoing. An inquiry will be conducted to determine why this was overlooked. For now, we have announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the family, and as Mayor, I – along with the entire BMC – stand in solidarity with them,” she said.

She also called for an audit of old trees and manholes across the city, and appealed: “My appeal to Mumbaikars is this: step out only if you have essential work. People go to the seaside for recreation. I saw children being made to sit on the sea walls. That is extremely dangerous. With the high tide, going there is unsafe. Unless it is necessary, do not venture out without a reason.”

Other Rain-Related Incidents

Residents of Navi Mumbai’s Chirner village reported severe waterlogging, saying they had killed several snakes while wading through floodwater. Two days earlier, a 55-year-old man, Aslam Isak Shaikh, died after falling into an open manhole in Sakinaka; police have lodged a case against a contractor and drainage workers.

Regional Impacts & Rescues

In Chhattisgarh, 14 labourers trapped beneath an unfinished bridge over the Bagnai River near Bijapal were rescued by Gariaband police and the Mahasamund Home Guard after rising waters swept into their makeshift shelter.

“Bijapal village is located on the border of Gariaband and Mahasamund districts, under the jurisdiction of Chura Police Station. Bridge construction work was underway on the Bagnai River there, and 14 labourers were living in a makeshift shed beneath the bridge. Due to continuous rainfall in Gariaband district over the past 24 hours, the water level rose suddenly, trapping all 14 labourers,” DSP Nitesh Singh said.

“Upon receiving this information, a joint rescue operation was successfully carried out by the Gariaband Police team and the Mahasamund Home Guard team. Had they not been rescued in time, their lives could have been in danger; we have averted a serious situation. It is raining continuously. Gariaband district is surrounded by forests, small streams, rivers, and hills; consequently, water levels are rising due to the rain. The Gariaband Police team is on alert at the site and maintaining a close watch,” he added.

In Jharkhand, continuous rain left parts of Ranchi waterlogged. Mayor Roshni Khalkho said the municipal corporation has increased JCBs, field staff and drain‑cleaning and deployed modern machinery, but many drains remain damaged and need reconstruction amid a funding shortfall.

In Uttar Pradesh, heavy rain caused severe waterlogging on the Delhi–Lucknow road at Hapur, disrupting traffic.
