Bhubaneswar: A woman and her son were taken into custody in Odisha’s Khordha district on Wednesday for allegedly possessing brown sugar worth Rs 46 lakh.
According to information, the brown sugar was recovered from the duo by officials of the Excise Department during a raid.
The accused have been identified as Lokanath Paikaray and Mami Paikaray.
A scooter allegedly used in drug trafficking operation and Rs 7,000 in cash have also been seized from them.
Based on a specific information about brown sugar trafficking, the operation was carried out in the jurisdiction of the Khordha Town police station.
During the raid,, around 460 grams of brown sugar was seized from the possession of two in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. The seized contraband has an estimated market value of Rs 46 lakh, said a senior official.
The mother-son duo was suspected to have been involved in the alleged brown sugar racket in the Shakti Nagar area of Khordha for a long time. Further investigation is underway.
