Shillong: Chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Mohan Yadav has now got in touch with his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma to trace a newlywed couple from Indore in his state who went missing under mysterious circumstances from Sohra in the East Khasi Hills of the northeastern state on May 24.
Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam got married on May 11 in Indore and left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20. According to the family, the couple first went to Guwahati via Bengaluru, where they offered prayers at the Maa Kamakhya Temple, before moving to Shillong in Meghalaya on May 23.
From Shillong, the couple travelled to Sohra, where Cherapunji is located. This location in the East Khasi Hils – considered the rainiest place in the world – is also known as the Oshra Hills. The couple then rented a scooter at Cherapunji on May 24 and left for a remote destination.
After they failed to contact the couple, Raja’s brother Vipin and Sonam’s brother Govind set out for Meghalaya. At Cherapunji, they came to know from the police that the scooter they had rented was found abandoned at a remote location, close to a ravine, nearly 15 km away.
Locals claimed that the place where the scooter was found is notorious for criminal activities. Another couple had gone missing there sometime back, they claimed.
Meanwhile, Sangma is known to have told Yadav that all efforts are being made by the police to trace the missing couple.
Yadav, in a post on X, said: “The news of Indore residents and newlyweds Raja and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi going missing in Osra Hills of Shillong while touring Meghalaya is extremely worrying. In this regard, I spoke to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma over the phone and discussed the matter and requested for quick and effective action. The Chief Minister (of Meghalaya) assured that his police and administration are seriously trying to find out the location of the newlyweds.”
Yadav also said that he has directed senior officials of Madhya Pradesh to remain in constant touch and coordinate with the Meghalaya administration in this matter.
“I pray to God that Raja and Sonam return home safely. We are working with full commitment for their safe return,” Yadav posted.
