Mumabi: Schools remained shut, BEST buses were diverted from their regular routes and trains cancelled on Monday as Mumbai and its suburbs experienced heavy overnight rainfall, resulting in widespread waterlogging.

“In order to avoid inconvenience to students, a holiday for the first session is declared for all BMC, Government and Private schools and colleges in Mumbai. The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation,” Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)  said.

According to reports, suburban train services, especially those of the Central Railway, were running slowly. Train services on Main line Down & Up Fast line between CSMT – Thane has been suspended due to waterlogging at various places. Harbour line services are temporarily suspended due to waterlogging at Chunnabhati. Train services, however, have resumed on the Central Line at Sion and Bhandup stations after rainwater receded.

Pune-Mumbai Deccan Queen, one of the premier trains between the two cities, also had to be cancelled for the day due to the heavy rain.

5) 12127 (CSMT-PUNE INTERCITY EXPRESS)

Police had to shut down the Malad subway due to heavy flooding after a car got stuck and was seen floating in the water.

The financial capital reportedly recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) records, the Santacruz observatory recorded  40.9mm of rain by 2.30 am and the figure surged to 210.9mm by 5.30 am, indicating that 170mm of rainfall during the three-hour period. Govandi and Powai areas recorded the highest rainfall of 315 mm and 314 mm, respectively.

“Around 270mm rainfall was recorded between 2 am and 6 am today. An ‘orange’ alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued in Mumbai for the next 24 hours. ‘Yellow’ alert for heavy rain issued for tomorrow,” IMD Director Sunil Kamble told ANI.
